Our Care Practices

Kapiti Rest Home works within the current NZ Health Standards and the Contract to deliver residential care services we have with the Ministry of Health. Our adherence to the standards and contract is measured by regular external audits.

The outcome of the audits determine whether we can be Certified to deliver residential services. In addition we must also have a current building warrant of fitness which includes fire emergency equipment and regular fire alarm drills.

Our kitchen is required to be assessed independently for hygiene and food safety equipment and practices. Our menu is regularly reviewed by a dietician to ensure the Residents receive a diet which is varied, well balanced and nutritious.

We have welcomed the certification process and the associated audits including “unannounced audits” as it provides us with independent feedback and benchmarking on our current performance. We take pride in the service we deliver and the certification process fits well with our continuous improvement approach.

Our achievement is only possible due to the dedication of our staff who are all committed and supported to initial and on-going training.

We affiliate ourselves with many different bodies associated with general health care and the care of the elderly. These associations help us achieve our aims and also provide information, training and seminars covering a vast range of topics which help us in our ongoing quest to provide the best possible care for our residents.

On entry to the Rest Home, a personal care plan is developed with each resident.

Our Diversional Therapist is an important factor in our ability to provide an individual based care plan for each and every resident. Whether in group sessions or on a one to one basis our DT creates, keeps active and challenges our residents to remain both physically and mentally active for as long as possible.

Together, the manager, DT and nurse are responsible for gathering the necessary information needed to provide the best plan possible for each resident.

Family input into these is very helpful and actively encouraged. The care plan is a living document, read by all caregivers and used to determine how we approach the daily care for each Resident. The care plans are supported by our Quality Manual which is also a living document.  These documents are open for inspection.*

An important aspect of our care practice is that we work closely with, and listen to the families of our residents as well as the residents themselves. Our residents wishes and those of their families are extremely important in ensuring that we as a "home from home" provide the best care possible. We are always willing to talk with families and residents regarding our approach and how we could do our job better.

We understand that making the decision to move into a rest home can be for some quite difficult and also that the potential resident and their family can have different issues from one another.  We are happy to talk through any reservations and if useful will set up meetings with existing residents and/or families. We advocate a “try first” approach where a Resident is able to stay with us for a “holiday” before making a commitment to move.

We recognise that we are part of a wider community delivering care services to the elderly and as such promote co-operation and information sharing amongst other care providers.  Amongst the benefits of this approach, this enables us to assist residents to make choices which work for them and their families both now and when their care needs change.

We have a complaints process which is clearly documented in our Quality Manual and forms are available at our front door.  We view any complaint as an opportunity to revise and improve our service regarding the care and respect we afford our resident "family".

*Individual Care plans are available to the Resident’s EPOA and only to others with permission granted by the Resident.
